The Orton Gillingham (O.G.) Approach
Orton-Gillingham is an approach to teaching reading that provides teachers with the skills to tailor their reading instruction to the needs of the individual student who is struggling to learn to read in their classroom. It is an approach that works for all students who are learning to read, including those who easily acquire reading skills as well as for those who struggle to learn to read because of dyslexia/reading disabilities:
“Orton Gillingham is a direct, explicit, multi-sensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach literacy when reading, writing, and spelling does not come easily to individuals, such as those with dyslexia. It is most properly understood and practiced as an approach, not a method, program, or system. In the hands of a well-trained and experienced instructor, it is a powerful tool of exceptional breadth, depth, and flexibility.”
