Overview of Training

The Classroom Educator Course
This course offers training to enable teachers to use the Orton-Gillingham approach, which encapsulates Structured Literacy, in a classroom setting or specialized tutoring intervention practice. This course requires 30 hours over 4.5 days of training delivered via Zoom (in person sessions offered in summer months). Attendees will learn about:
• Dyslexia & reading disorders, signs & symptoms
• Strategies for multi-sensory instruction
• Formal & informal testing
• How to use information for tutorials and lessons
• How to plan an Orton-Gillingham lesson
• Fundamental elements of the Orton-Gillingham approach including an introduction to phonology and basic phonics
Attendees will work collaboratively to demonstrate a mock tutoring session

The Associate Level Course:
This course Is designed for teachers who are specifically interested in teaching students with Dyslexia, Language-Based Learning Disabilities or Reading/Spelling difficulties. The course prepares teachers to work in a one-on-one setting using diagnostic and prescriptive strategies to support student growth. A compulsory one-year voluntary practicum is a requirement of this course. Attendees will learn all that is covered in the Classroom Educators Course, as well as:
• Learning to read and interpret neuro-psychological testing
• Grammar & writing skills
• Intermediate phonics and morphology
• Latin roots of the English language
• Vocabulary, reading comprehension and fluency
Attendees will also take part in a mock tutoring session with evaluation and teacher critique.
